Why I created How Divorce Works

I'm Kim Korven.

I'm a retired lawyer with two law degrees. I've worked as a lawyer, adjudicator and mediator. I've also been divorced.

Those experiences taught me something that changed the way I understand divorce:

What matters to a legal system and what matters to a family are not necessarily the same thing.

I'm not pro-divorce.

I'm pro-kids experiencing greater peace and love in their families.

Sometimes that means parents find a way to stay together.

Sometimes a marriage ends.

I'm not here to tell you which is right for your family.

I'm here to help you understand the landscape before you make decisions that could shape your family's future.

You don't need to have decided to divorce.

You may be considering divorce.

You may know your marriage is ending.

You may have recently separated.

You may already have a lawyer or mediator.

How Divorce Works doesn't tell you whether to stay or leave.

It helps you understand what you're dealing with before you start making consequential decisions.

Start with what matters.

You may need a lawyer.

You may need a mediator.

You may need financial advice.

You may need court.

Or you may discover there are decisions you can make without any of them.

Start with your family.

Understand what matters.

Then understand the law.

Then decide where the law belongs.

Kim helped me go through my financials so I would better understand how division of property is done. This took the fear and mystery out of the process and gave me more confidence going into negotiation. We were able to quickly reach a settlement that was fair and equitable.

I was dealing with an unruly client myself, and wasn't sure which direction to go. This conflict wasn't gaining towards any resolution, and it was causing me a great deal of anxiety. Kim gave me the tools necessary to take the reins, and own / gain control of the situation. If you're looking for an excellent mediator, look no further than Kim Korven.

Kim helped me and my ex-spouse start an outline/framework to get started on our separation during COVID. It was very helpful as we navigated this process thru our different personalities. She has lots of knowledge and resources to share.

Kim is a very knowledgeable and compassionate and caring person. I have learnt a lot about the effects of separation, how to establish boundaries and about the resources available for a person going through separation. Not only that, i also learnt from her how to trust my voice within in difficult situations and to granting grace. I highly recommend her help
